How do Terpenes Work in the Body?

One way that terpenes work is to act on specific receptors and neurotransmitters. For example, certain terpenes act as serotonin uptake inhibitors (similar with antidepressants like Prozac); others enhance norepinephrine activity (similar with tricyclic antidepressants like Elavil); still others increase dopamine activity; and others augment GABA (the “downer” neurotransmitter that counters glutamate, the “upper”). Terpenes can exert their effects through inhalation, topically on the skin or orally through ingestion.
