Are There Different Levels of Complexity in the Terpene World?

Many people think terpenes are simple smells that plants emit.  That is far from the truth.  With over 80,000 known terpenes in nature, obviously, there is a rich complexity to terpenes in their natural chemistry and in the functions.  Just very generally, terpenes can be Monoterpenes, Ditepenes, Sesterpenes, Triterpenes, Meroterpenes, or even Tetraterpenoids like carotenoids such as Vitamin A and canthaxanthin.  The effects that terpenes have are even more diverse ranging from simple regulatory functions in nature to tumor inhibition.
